Mice (mouses?) choices

Post by macitect »

I had set aside my mighty mouse for a while because the ball was dirty and not scrolling up (not the first time this has happened). I was using instead a simple MS scroll-wheel mouse. It sucked. Then I started using a Macally... good mouse but the one I was using I had bought for my laptop and was too small. It started giving me tendonitis between my pinky and fourth fingers.

Anyways I've gone back to the mighty mouse after having cleaned it to the best of my abilities and realize how much I've missed it. Much better response in HD and other apps. and really quite comfortable for a simple mouse.

So does anyone have a bit of advice on how to clean the scroll ball? Or if not - what mouse (mice) are others using and are satisfied with?

I had the same problem with my MM, which I love. Apple's own advice didn't work for me:

I then came across an article where someone showed how to take it apart and clean the ball and rollers. I tried this and couldn't put it back together again!

There is also this rather inventive method, I haven't tried it though:

I ended up buying a new MM because, like you, I just can't get along with anything else. I think they are wonderful.

Thanks AJUK,

The rubbing alcohol, a cloth and a toothpick have done the job for me for now. I tried a trick with tape before but didn't succeed. I think I will do that tape trick with double sided... right after I get to Bureau en Gros (Staples/Office Depot). ;-)

I use an older MS explorer trackball with thumbwheel. The movement of the trackball is read by laser instead of moving wheels, so no parts to get dirty. The only problem I've had is when a hair or piece of lint gets on the ball & the laser reader goes nuts. But you just pop out the ball, grab the lint & pop the ball back in. I've been using the same trackball for 4 years & love it.
